Make a Statement in Summer 2009 With Bold Jewelry

While economic indicators may seem gloomy these days, predictions for splashy, statement pieces when it comes to jewelry have brightened the outlook. It seems the gloomier the headlines, the more bodacious the jewelry. This played out at Valentino's Spring/Summer 2009 ready to wear collection, where models sashayed down the runways covered in choker jewelry necklaces - some that completely covered the model's throat in bling. Models for designer Zac Posen donned big door knocker earrings. Marc Jacobs flaunted humungous pendants on chunky chains. The message seems clear: Bigger is better. Put away the dainty jewelry for the time being. Summer 2009 is all about statement jewelry pieces.

Summer is a wonderful time to experiment with jewelry and fashion. Geometric-shaped jewelry in bold colors plays off last season's Art Deco trend. And while the 2008 season was about playing down clothing to highlight an accent jewelry piece, 2009 is encouraging over-the-top accessory fun. As the dog days of summer descend, we tend to show more skin and less clothing - the perfect opportunity to make a statement with jewelry.

Jewelry Necklaces
When it comes to accessorizing the neckline, think ostentatious. For instance, select an "outfit maker," or an abstract-cut gemstone dramatically fastened to a chain to cascade down the chest. This is a great look with a sundress in a bold color, such as canary yellow, orange or red. This season's low-cut necklines are the perfect backdrop to the over-the-top jewelry necklace. Beads also continue to be a choice trend when it comes to jewelry necklaces. The warm days are an ideal time to pair this versatile and creative look with your summer styles.

Earrings
This season's long, dramatic earrings (also called "shoulder dusters"), pair beautifully with sun-kissed shoulders and strappy styles. Go for a dazzling pair of chandelier or dangle earrings that draw attention. Yellow gold continues to be the top metal choice in jewelry. A pair of yellow gold dangly earrings are the perfect accessory for reflecting the sun. It won't lose its color intensity with prolonged sun exposure for quite some time. Again, be bold so the earrings can stand alone, and you can forgo a jewelry necklace.

Bracelets and Bangles
There's something effortless and fun about a bold bangle to accessorize the arm. Choose one in fuchsia or lime green to highlight the color in a patterned sun dress. Whether it's a chunky rough-cut gemstone or a collection of metallic bracelets worn together, wrist candy can spice up an outfit instantly. Another hot trend is to layer bracelets of different styles and shapes on the wrist for a "hippie chic" look. From skulls to roses to love sayings, tattoo print bangles are a fun and edgy jewelry choice best worn with denim and tank tops. For a more natural look, leather, wood, beads, and feathers mix together well.

Jewelry's Hottest
Continue to seek out mixed media jewelry in unlikely finishes, colors and patterns. Bib-style and large statement jewelry necklaces is an instant trendsetter. Leather, turquoise and feathers are another great jewelry combination. When it comes to catching summer's glow, choose pieces with lots of shine, such as heavy metal, crystals and rhinestones. As always, gold and silver are in this season paired with bright colored accents and stones in jewelry necklaces and bracelets. When it comes to vintage, everything old is new again. Vintage jewelry, such as a right-hand ring or grandmother's costume jewelry adds an instant touch of whimsy to any look.

Like depressed economies of decades before, the response in fashion and jewelry often takes its inspiration from Hollywood and the stuff of dreams. Although your budget may not allow for splurges in jewelry, you can still add a few signature pieces to channel your inner summer goddess.
